THE ROLE
Route setters set the tone, style and experience for climbers at the facility. They are a collaborate team of movement specialists that are responsible for developing climbing skills, techniques and problem solving capabilities for the community through the products they create on the wall. Setters are imaginative and innovative. Creative in their approach, setters must strike a balance between form and function to create inspiring climbs and look and climb awesome. Setters are unselfish, critical and constructive. They work in a commercial setting to ensure the distribution of climbing is set for the community. Age groups, skill level, and physical attributes are all consideration for route setters. They ensure the climbing at the facility is as diverse as the community and encourages healthy progression. They are perfectionists, unsatisfied with, “good enough”. They are hungry to improve their craft with each new set. They are efficient with time management as a team and individually. They take direction and feedback well, to incorporate criticism and applause constructively. They are highly skilled at working with tools of the trade, comfortable at working at heights both on ropes and ladders. We value punctuality, reliability, attention to detail, initiative and leadership by example. Applicants must be avid climbers with a sound grasp of technical climbing and movement. Route setters must enjoy working in a family-friendly environment. Must have 1+ years working as a route setter in a commercial climbing facility. Training of high value applicants may be considered from our Route Setting Training and Apprenticeship Program.
THE OPPORTUNITY
We are a matrix organization with all team members wearing several hats. You will be under the guidance of the Head Route Setter, with direction and feedback from the Operations Manager and Program Manager. Route setters will:
Be a consistent performer as a Five Star Factory route setter
Contribute to the setting style of the facility
Variety is encouraged as long as fundamental objectives of fun, safe quality movement is achieved
Have the ability to explore new ideas, be creative and innovative
Strive for high quality work that matches the needs of the community with direction from the Head Route Setter
Be collaborative with the goals of the facility taking priority over individual preference
Be independent, able to see assignments through to completion as needed
Work consistent weekly hours to meet rotation schedule of the facility
Prioritize climber safety and general facility traffic flow
Prioritize colour distribution on the wall to ensure good colour separation of climbs for easy identification from the community
Maintain use safety barriers to maintain a clean, organized and efficient workspace when setting
Utilize a best practice approach for rigging, ladder, tools and workplace safety
Forerun observe other climbers on all work and practice a 3x validation approach to grading
Be receptive to feedback to improve individual sets and future work
Accurately grade and mark all climbs and record work using our distribution tracker tools
Maintain the climbing wall surface and t-nuts as needed
Participate in hold washing to ensure holds are cleaned after use and ready for the next setting shift
Maintain organized route setting and hold washing areas with holds, ladders and equipment properly stored, batteries charged and holds placed in corresponding areas based on colours, sizes, etc.
Be responsive to safety concerns, spinning holds, or other forms of feedback that require immediate attention
Participate in staff meetings, training and product knowledge sessions to further skills and team building
Be available for setting requirements during special events and climbing competitions
Be a team player and prioritize the company vision over self-promotion
Be your best self with a willingness to learn and improve through an open mindset
TEAM FIT
Applicants must have a strong work ethic, must be efficient and able to work on a reliable schedule. Applicants should have a positive attitude, be quick problem solvers, and must work well with others. Route setters must be collaborative in a team environment with productivity for independent work. Route setters may consider being climbing coaches to further their contribution and develop more climbers in the community. YOUR WORK HOURS
Regular weekly part-time hours may be available. Consistent availability is preferred for 2-3 route setting shifts per week.
YOUR REWARD
Route setters may earn between minimum wage to $24/hr based on skill and experience. Apprentices start at minimum wage with the ability to increase by achieving performance and quality milestones with each review period. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must be minimum employment age in Ontario. Staff must be able to perform manual labour, which may include working at height. Vulnerable sector check required for individuals 18 years and older.
